What We Do
Plum Ethical sells beautiful bags. Maybe, one day, we'll sell other things but we know most about bags, so for for now it's just bags. And they have a conscience...
The fashion bag industry is generally regarded as being fairly un-ethical, admittedly with some notable exceptions. Currently, there's pretty much a choice between an un-ethical fashion bag or an ethical bag that looks like an old cement bag (because it is). We're totally in support of this kind of sustainable, ethical approach to bag making (you can get the cement bag here, if you like) but we want to support efforts to find beautiful, fashionable alternatives because we think ethical is beautiful, and can be fashionable too.
Fair-trade artisans often have a skill and craft that is not present in sweatshop goods. So, why then should we restrict ourselves to the lower end of the market? If you by a bag that costs £10, perhaps £7 or £8 of that goes to the shop and distributor, so they can cover costs and make a fair living. Not a lot left for the artist. Higher-value ethical bags mean more money going back to the bag artist, and their community.
Our aim is to provide a collection of beautiful bags that will be make you happy every time you see them - not just because they're ethical and have made a difference all the way up the supply chain, but also because they look good, feel good and make you feel special.
Who We are
PlumEthical was founded by, and is run by Simon Garrett, Dad to two little boys, Bertie and Oliver – who got fed up with the ethical evasiveness of the bag companies with whom he was once working, and decided to do something about it. He is also very good at reading stories about Thomas the Tank engine and Elmer, with different voices and everything.
